You've got to do both things, so that you can make sure you're able to keep them healthy. But also so that you can make sure they avoid any problems or complications that can come from common diseases.
That's dangerous for your pet, and can cause all sorts of health problems. That's why it's not a risk that you want to take, and it's not something that your dog deserves to be put through either.
